Inaugural European SYP Conference 2026 : Peace and Security at a Crossroads

The inaugural European Student/Young Pugwash Conference, Peace and Security at a Crossroads, took place at the University of Pisa, Italy, from 25–27 September 2026.

The conference brought together students, young professionals, researchers and experts from across Europe and beyond to discuss current challenges to peace and security. Organised by a pan-European Student/Young Pugwash committee, the conference provided a space for interdisciplinary and cross-national dialogue on issues ranging from nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament to emerging technologies and European security.

The programme opened with the keynote session, “The Past, Present and Future of Non-Proliferation, Arms Control and Disarmament,” followed by discussions on European security, nuclear issues, emerging technologies, and the changing security environment. Panels and working sessions provided opportunities for participants to present their research, exchange perspectives and engage directly with speakers and experts.

The conference also explored the relationship between technological developments and international security. Discussions included European technological leadership, sensors and strategic capabilities, as well as the implications of quantum technologies for nuclear policy. A dedicated session, “From Memory to Action: Civil Society, Science and the Next Generation of Disarmament,” examined the role of civil society, science and younger generations in shaping the future of disarmament.

Members of the International Student/Young Pugwash Leadership Team were involved throughout the conference. Matteo Bordin, Sathchidha Pachiappan and Joel Christoph contributed to the organising team. Ksenia Pirnavskaia chaired the keynote session, while Nicolas Ayala Arboleda presented “The European Quantum Strategy and Nuclear Issues” during the panel on “European Technological Leadership: Sensors, Strategy and Sovereignty.” Joel Christoph also chaired the session on “From Memory to Action: Civil Society, Science and the Next Generation of Disarmament.”

The conference reflects ISYP’s broader commitment to creating opportunities for students and young professionals to engage in cross-national dialogue on the intersection of science, technology, society and security. It also marks a further step in strengthening connections between Student/Young Pugwash groups across Europe.

We thank all participants, speakers, chairs, experts and organisers who contributed to the conference and to the discussions throughout the three days.
