Event: Keeping nuclear memories alive, an APLN-ISYP roundtable

On May 25 EDT, ISYP was pleased to co-host an event foused on memories surrounding nuclear weapons use. This event was hosted in partnership with Asia-Pacific Leadership Network (APLN). Two of our own leadership team were featured in the event: Haruka Noishiki participated in the panel as Discussant and Haneen Khalid moderated the panel.

Please find the panel description below:

Decades have passed since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the near nuclear near-misses of the Cold War, and nuclear testing in places like the Pacific Islands. Memories of these events are fading as time passes and their significance is now being forgotten by many. The publics and the policymakers today and in the future may not be fully unaware of the catastrophic and lasting consequences of nuclear weapons and risks associated with their use. How can younger generations remain conscious of the risks and actual costs of nuclear weapons? How can we ensure that the humanitarian costs of nuclear weapons are taken into account in nuclear policy and broader security debates? How can we educate the public about the risks and actual costs of nuclear weapons? What strategies can be used to make this education effective and impactful?

We are lucky to have Tanvi Kulkarni of APLN as our South Asia Advisor. Read more about her background, and our South Asia programming, here.
