Event: The Global Hibakusha – A Discussion with Prof. Robert Jacobs

On April 25, 2023, International Students / Young Pugwash convened a book discussion event together with Professor Robert (Bo) Jabocs. Bo Jacobs is a professor of history at the Hiroshima Peace Institute and the Graduate School of Peace Studies of Hiroshima City University.

Bo Jacobs is a co-founder and lead researcher on the Global Hibakusha Project that facilitated extensive fieldwork in more than 20 radiation affected communities worldwide. This field research along with his tremendous knowledge and compassion led him to write the book “Nuclear Bodies – The Global Hibakusha” which was published in 2022 by Yale University Press.

The book binds the fate of dispersed global communities, that remain affected by radiation from nuclear testing, production and disasters, together. Their stories de-nationalize and broaden the concept of “hibakusha”. Moreover, Bo Jacobs’ book reframes the Cold War as a limited nuclear war, fought against the least empowered, creepingly and over generations..
